After the long battle of the previous session, the adventurers had slunk off to
bed. They awoke in the morning, with wounds healed, feeling a little more
optimistic despite the loss of their recent comrade the half-orc. Celceor
immeadiately set off to see Skie the Magic Item merchant in order to assure
himself that she had not been infected with The Vanishing.
She had not.
They decided that after their last battle they needed a little more 'muscle,'
so, after checking in with Jenya at the Temple of Cuthbert (and refusing her
offer of sending along Rufus Laro, her assistant), they decided to do a little
recruiting. Jenya pointed out that may freelance caravan guards,
adventurers and bodyguards could be found usually hanging around looking for
work in the Merchan's quarter or in the inns and taverns so they headed to the
Drunken Morokoth.
Here they met a doughty dwarf fighter with a tower shield as big as himself
named Pillar Grug. "You look like a trustworthy fellow," they
said, "Take your place in our ranks!" Pillar Grug was Mark's
new PC. They also interviewed a tall and frail looking cleric of Pelor
named Eggo of the Holy Brotherhood (whom they accepted), a somewhat dimwitted
mercenary named
With Mohag and Eggo in tow, they set off for Jzadirune, entering through the
lock shop and cautiously descending the stairs. Celceor sent his owl
ahead to scout the mask room and the owl, Rune, warned of "danger" in
the room below. Carefully watching the steps, Nick investigated the
secret door and discovered a string was rigged to the inside of the door.
He cut the string and managed to shut the door as the trap that had been rigged
to drop a flask of alchemist fire exploded without harming them. After
waiting for the flames to subside, they opened the door and saw the smoke
filled room that they knew was only a small hallway connecting the stairs to
the elevator room via a secret door. Nick and Mohag stepped forward to
seek the secret door they assumed had to be there and suddenly a pit opened up
underneath their feet. Mohag managed to avoid falling in but Nick fell
ten feet into a mess of acidic goo at the bottom of the pit. After they
hauled Nick out of the pit and scraped off most of the caustic slime and healed
him, they began to try to figure out a way of getting across the pit without
dying. Finally Angrod climbed across going hand-over-hand along the
narrow ledge at the edge of the pit and the small and dextrous Nick managed to
get across and open the secret door on the other side.
Two hobgoblins, who had apparently heard the rukus and were waiting for them to
open the door began hurling javelins at the party and slashing at Angrod who
was hanging by his fingers from the ledge at the edge of the pit. Finally
an acid arrow spell from Celceor and a handaxe hurled by Pillar Grug
killed the two hobgoblins and the party used ropes and pitons to cross the
pit. Mohag grumbled about having to leave his piton behind and the party
compensated him with a copper piece from the pockets of one of the hobgoblins.
Since they now had the elevator room, they stepped onto the wooden platform and
pulled the lever that caused the platform to slowly lower itself into the
bowels of the earth. It went down as the dwarf bard speculated as to
whether or not the rough stone chute had been excavated by dwarven or gnomish
hands. After travelling down about 200 feet they stopped in an octagonal
room much like the one 200 feet above with a wooden door on one wall and a
lever (that presumably caused the platform to rise) on another wall. The
door was unlocked and led to an odd shaped room lit by two fire beetles suspended
in iron cages from the cieling. A short, blind hallway led to a secret
door that they easily found and nick listened to a wooden door on one wall and
heard grunts and groans of pleasure or agony. They arrayed themselves
before the door and opened it, revealing a rectangular room filled with rotting
garbage. Among the garbage stood a slime-streaked gangly ogre-like
creature who was grunting with pleasure as he scratched a hard to reach place
on his back with the tip of a large iron falchion.
Not liking the look of this creature, Pillar Grug shut the door but the ogre
had apparently heard the door open and close and noticed the light from the
fire beetles and the group's torch; he clumped open to the door and opened it,
shouting, "Ha! More carrion for my larder! Very
nice!" The creature was hard to hit and had the advantage of reach,
but it also fought clumsily with it's massive falchion. The monster
seemed to have a hard time hitting the party members while they pelted it with
spells and missiles and wore it down by degrees. Before too long, Mohag
slashed at it and the creature fell to the floor, dead.
The garbage consisted mostly of half rotted meat and fungus. A large
crude bed, made of fungus, was in one corner and a large iron chest filled with
4,990 coppers, 2,248 silvers, a potion flask and 2 gems was found in the
mess. The party grabbed the gems and the potion and vowed to return for
the coins.
They returned to the room with the fire beetle cages and investigated the
secret door. They opened it to discover a large room lit by strange stone
braziers in the corners. These braziers were carved of stone in the shape
of three armed and three legged creatures with three eyes and their mouths on
to of their heads. The open mouths held smouldering coals that lit the
room with a nasty odor. Two huge sets of double doors were centered in
the centers of the northeast and southwest walls and the northeast door was
flanked by two small arrow slits and barred with a large iron bar. A
giant stone statue of a grim looking dwarf in armor with an axe stood in the
center of the room and some nasty looking barbed and hooked chains were draped
over the statue. The statue's eyes were made of valuable looking gems and
two hobgoblins stood talking by the base of the statue.
The players sharged into the room and attacked the hobgoblins. One was
quickly killed while the other tried to escape through the southeast doors but
Celceor wrestled him to the ground. Angrod slashed at the hobgoblin with
his sword and then used a healing orison to stabilize the creature but left him
unconscious.
The name "Zenith Splintershield" was carved into the base of the
statue and Nick recognized this as the name of a great dwarven hero who had
once lived in the Malachite Hold and later dissapeared. As Pillar Grug
touched the chains, they came to life and slashed at the party, inflicting
damage on several members. Although they managed to hit the chains, the
hard steel seemed to resist damage. Eggo used his Magic Stone Spell to
damage the wierd monster and finally Pillar Grug smashed it to bits.
Nick climbed up the statue and pried out the gemstone eyes. The gems were
stuck in with some sort of super glue (bonds in seconds!) and he damaged the
stones in prying them out; but after having gotten them out he stuck them in
his pocket.
We ended the session at this point.
