After last session, Mace advanced to level 4 and Kane and Trygvie
advanced to level 3.
Last session ended with the players
exploring the maze like tunnels they had entered beneath the Inn of the
Smiling Mermaid in Marshville. They had explored down some long
and damp, dark hallways, gone up and down stairs, found a small
door and emerged in a hallway off an underground temple to some unknown
marine god. The halfling pressed his ear against the panels of a
wooden door down the hall from the temple and reported hearing a deep
throated voice speaking in a language he
didn't understand. The party debated what to do at this point and
finally
decided to kick in the door.
Mace kicked the door in with his heavy armored boot and the party surprised four fishmen, two of whom were sitting at a table enjoying a meal of raw fish and two of who were standing like nimrods in the back of the room.
Trygvie cast a Scare spell as the rest of the party dashed in; one
of the
fishmen was hit by the spell and cowered in the corner. Kane got
caught
in the area of effect of the spell, failed his spell save and ran down
the
hall for a round, only to turn around and run back the next round after
the
spell wore off.
This proved to be the toughest fight yet. Two of the fishmen were trident armed guardsmen, one was a fishman spell caster or priest and the fourth was a deadly fighter -- a fishman monk who fought with a sharp bladed kama in each hand.
Whisper went down early in the fight, mowed down by the Fishman monk's sharp blades. Castor sang a song of bravery and battle to inspire his friends while the fishman priest did the same for his icthyoid henchmen. Wilbered managed to stabilize the unconscious halfling with a minor heal spell, but then Mace went down, a victim of joint attacks by the fishman priest and monk. Trygvie nearly wore out his wand of magic missiles, peppering the fishmen with missiles, until one of the fishman guards ran down the hall and stabbed the elf with his trident, nearly killing the unarmored spell caster.
Finally the fishman Cleric and his monk henchman were killed, along with one of the fishman guards. Trygvie ran down the hallway, pursued by a trident wielding fishman. The elf started webbing the corridor and the fishman in it with his web wand. While a revived Mace and Castor shot arrows and crossbow bolts at the trapped fishman, the silent Wilbered and Kane used a torch to scorch the webs away from the unconscious halfling. The party used up the last of their healing magic just to get the halfling conscious again, set fire to the webs (killing the last fishman) and locked themselves in the room to heal up and regain spells.
Plundering the room and the dead fishmen, they found that one of the
tridents and the two kama were magical. Wilbered also took a
coral bowl, a scroll of 3 sure light wounds spell and a small chest
that contained pearls and scrolls
written in an indecipherable language. The room contained a stone
table,
two chairs, some raw fish and four bowls of glowing worms that lit up
the
room.
After several hours for rest and a meal had passed, a refreshed
group of
battered adventures ventured back out into the temple. Once again
they
gave the altar a wide berth, and proceeded to the narrow staircase on
the
southeast wall of the temple.
The stairs went up 30 feet and ended in a blank wall. Whisper
checked the wall for a secret door, found one, and began checking for
traps. Castor, who was standing guard in the temple, heard loud,
flapping footsteps approaching from the northwest passage. The
party hustled though the secret door into a darkened and dusty cellar
room that contained a few old pieces of furniture,
a wooden door and a stone sculpture of Neptune. They closed the
secret
door and waited.
A few minutes later a group of fishmen tumbled through the secret
door, in obvious pursuit and seeking to revenge the killers of their
comrades downstairs. Although the fishmen were nimble, the party
was determined and merciless --- soon all of the fishmen were cut down,
including the last one who tried to escape.
The group proceeded through the wooden door and found themselves in
a small
room, where dusty shelves held old books and a ladder led up to a
trapdoor in the center of the ceiling. As the halfling checked
the ladder and trap door for traps, some other players investigated the
old books. These books were just old hymnals that contained songs
in praise of Neptune and songs of prayer for calm seas and good fishing.
The players peeked through the trapdoor and saw a dusty room with a
few garments hanging on the wall. After screwing up their
courage, they went through the trapdoor and found themselves in the
chapel of Neptune that they had explored days earlier in Marshville.
The long tunnel they had
entered under the Inn had apparently gone under the river and exited
here.
The temple was empty, just as they had left it, and it was just
before
dawn.
The adventure ended here for the night.
